Charlotte, NC is a blooming metropolitan area surrounded by a network of suburbs. In 1983 a master plan for the entire Mecklenburg Greenway System was proposed as a 73 mile greenway system spanning Mecklenburg County that would connect the city to its surrounding neighborhoods and towns. Today there are only 43 miles of greenway constructed and they don't connect in the intended way.

I surveyed a number of Mecklenburg County residents to gauge community engagement and interest in the greenways. I found that most had used portions of the greenways before and were excited at the possibility of extending the greenway network, because it is an effective cross-town pathway and residents feel it is safe than walking and biking on the street. 

I used the plans from the original proposition and maps of the current landscape of Charlotte and it's surrounding areas to draft a map of what a new completed greenway system would like. I used adobe illustrator and procreate to hand illustrate a map of the the new greenway system based on the original plans with emphasis on connecting existing pathways and extending the greenway's reach.
